World Arts Foundation, Inc. is proud to announce that Valerie Yvette Peterson, award-winning poet, playwright, and community leader, has been appointed Executive Producer of the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. “Keep Alive the Dream” Tribute Celebration in Portland, Oregon.
For 40 consecutive years, this historic event and cherished community tradition has brought together artists, educators, and civic leaders to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through music, storytelling, and collective reflection.
The 2026 celebration, guided by the theme, “A Legacy in Motion: Moving the Dream Forward,” will highlight multigenerational voices, honor Portland’s civil rights leaders, and showcase ongoing work for justice, equity, and community empowerment.
“This year, our vision places youth at the center, rising as bold, creative leaders ready to carry the dream into the future,” said Peterson. “At the same time, we honor the wisdom of our elders-the roots who have paved the way with sacrifice and resilience. Together, they form the living bridge that ensures Dr. King’s Dream is not only remembered but advanced.”
Valerie brings decades of proven expertise, creativity, and visionary leadership to the role of executive producer. She is the recipient of the 2023 President Joseph R. Biden Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing her lifelong commitment to the arts and community service.
In addition to her artistic leadership, Peterson brings years of experience as a Program Manager, with a strong background in budget management, operations, and program development. Her unique blend of creativity and organizational excellence makes her well-suited to lead one of Portland’s most celebrated cultural events. She is honored to step into her newest role.
